Election Day(s) & Night(s) (Guest: Leigh Wambsganss)

There was a Time when Winners were Known Well Before the Rooster Crowed

What was once known as election day has too often become election days and weeks, sometimes months. These types of delays, which should be reduced with technology, only seem to extend. We’ve gotten to the point where voters expect to wake up the day after election day without knowing if their candidate(s) won or lost. What can we expect this year? Will anything change? Will it be different this time?

Leigh Wambsganss, founding board member and Executive Director of My Patriot Mobile Action is very close to elections in Texas. As part of that expertise, she’s an excellent speaker when it comes to electoral landscapes. She can give you insight into what can happen, and what IS happening, AS it’s happening this election season.

In 2000, the election wasn’t decided until more than a month after election day. In 2004, the battle for supremacy came down to one state (Ohio). In 2008, John McCain’s running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin invigorated the base, but Barack Obama pulled away after the infamous mortgage crisis. In 2012, Mitt Romney fumbled the third debate, ignoring the biggest issue at that time – the Benghazi attacks. In 2016, Donald Trump pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Presidential election history. In 2020, results in several key swing states weren’t decided for days, with Joe Biden becoming president. Then there was January 6th.

So, what’s in store in 2024? Leigh Wambsganss, of Patriot Mobile and the Founding Board Member and Executive Director of My Patriot Mobile Action, is very close to what’s going on in the state of Texas. What does she see in her state? What is the turnout like? What is she seeing in Texas that could tell us about elections in other states? Are there any trends that cross state lines?

What does the nation have to look forward to? Will results across the nation be delayed or finalized? What concerns Leigh about Texas? What states will be at issue and why can’t election results be tallied more quickly? Schedule an interview with Wambsganss today, for an expert analysis.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think are the main barriers preventing quicker and more reliable results, especially in battleground states?
  2. As someone with close ties to Texas, can you explain what unique challenges or trends you’re seeing in the state this year that might reflect larger national patterns? Do you anticipate anything unexpected from Texas voters in 2024?
  3. How is voter turnout shaping up in Texas for 2024? Are there any noticeable shifts in voter enthusiasm, and how does this compare to previous years?
  4. With an increase in early voting and mail-in ballots over the years, how has this affected election timelines? In your opinion, is it helping or hindering the process of timely results?
  5. Given the historical importance of swing states like Florida, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, which states do you believe will be critical in 2024 and why? Are there any states that are gaining new prominence this year?
  6. Many voters are still concerned about election integrity, especially after the contested 2020 election. What are the most pressing issues around election security that need to be addressed, and what is being done to improve voter confidence in the system?
  7. Looking at past elections like 2000 and 2020, where results weren’t known for days or weeks, do you see any possibility of another prolonged delay in 2024? What lessons have we learned from those experiences that could make a difference this time around?
  8. Finally, what do you think the future holds for “Election Night” as we know it? Will we ever return to the days when we could expect to know the results by the end of the evening, or is the nature of modern elections forever changed?
