Could Mexico’s Lawsuit Against US Gun Makers Actually Affect Second Amendment Rights?

A spokesman for the Second Amendment Foundation discusses the case, and what harm it could cause in the long run.

At one point, it appeared that Mexico’s lawsuit against select gun makers – one that accused them of flooding the country with firearms – wasn’t going to be a threat, as it was dismissed in a federal district court.

However, back in January, an appeals court reinstated the case, and according to the Epoch Times, it could be an effort to “weaken the Second Amendment protections enjoyed by Americans.”

With that, 27 federal lawmakers, led by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), have filed a brief, asking the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on Mexico’s lawsuit, in an effort to stop its pending damage towards private gun owners.

“Mexico’s lawsuit is an affront to the sovereignty of the United States of America,” the brief reads. “It has no place in federal court, and it attempts to dragoon American courts to subvert the policy determinations of the political branches of the U.S. government.”

It also notes that Mexico is trying “to impose its view of law, the right to bear arms, and liability protection on the American people.”

A spokesman for the Second Amendment Foundation joins us now to discuss the lawsuit further.

Q&A:

  1. Why is Mexico so determined with this lawsuit to hurt U.S. gun makers? Do they really believe they’re the reason their country is flooded with firearms?
  2. If it manages to go through, what kind of damage could this lawsuit do to the rights of private gun owners?
  3. What do you think about the brief that’s been filed by federal lawmakers, asking the Supreme Court to step in? Do you believe they should do so at this time?
  4. If they lose the lawsuit, could Mexico try to come back with other charges towards gun groups?
  5. Where can we learn more about the Second Amendment Foundation and its members?
