Connecticut Council Refuses To Tribute Fallen State Trooper With Thin Blue Line Flag (Guest: Michael Letts)

Law enforcement veteran Michael Letts discusses the decision by the Council, which fails to recognize one of its local heroes.

Many were hoping for Connecticut state government to honor fallen State Trooper First Class Aaron Pelletier with a ceremonial raising of a “thin blue line” flag. But the government had other ideas.

In a 5-3 state vote, the town council refused to fly the flag, noting that it was “antagonistic” and had “white supremacist” ties.

Democratic Councilmember Emily Zambrello noted, “That flag was either created or at least became prevalent in direct response to the Black Lives Matter protests. It’s viewed as antagonistic even if you don’t see it that way, and I don’t think that’s a good flag to fly, especially not without further discussion.”

But even with the flag’s “antagonistic” use by some, it stands as a badge of honor for the police officers that have gone through a world of hell over the past few years, mainly due to the “defund the police” campaign that has drained their budgets and forced thousands to retire.

Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various charitable groups and sponsorships.

His expertise in all things law and order make him a great subject for this show. Welcome, Michael!

  1. What do you think about Connecticut council’s decision to not fly the “thin blue line” flag in honor of Aaron Pelletier?
  2. Do you think Zambrello and the Council were “playing it safe” when it came to flying the flag? Were they concerned about it being conveyed as a message of hatred?
  3. What do you think the “thin blue line” flag stands for personally? What does it really say about police officers?
  4. What about Zambrello’s statement that it’s being used for “white supremacist” movements? Would you say that this is way off from the flag’s meaning?
  5. Is it possible that some are using the flag for the wrong reasons? Could that be what Connecticut council is so worried about?
  6. Instead of the flag, is there another way that Pelletier could be honored by the city government? Or is the flag the best way?
