The Epoch Times’ investigative reporter takes a closer look at what took place in the forum earlier this week.
China and Russia have once again taken aim with its criticism against the United States, this time at a security forum in Beijing.
The Xiangshan Forum, which discusses military diplomacy annually, was where several officials took aim at the country. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, for instance, noted how the U.S. created a dire situation for itself getting involved in the Ukraine war.
“The Western line of steady escalation of the conflict with Russia carries the threat of a direct military clash between nuclear powers, which is fraught with catastrophic consequences,” Shoigu noted. He also pointed out how the West wanted to inflict “strategic defeat” over Russia’s “hybrid war.”
But the big focus was to strengthen the bonds between Russia and China, as Zhang Youxia, vice chairman serving under China President Xi Jinping, noting how “some countries” were trying to criticize its government, without specifically mentioning the United States.
That said, Zhang did note how the country still wants to “develop military ties with the U.S.,” in a potential effort to possibly avoid a retaliatory response from U.S. officials.
Regardless, the show as a whole served for general criticism for the United States, and their ongoing treatment of both China and Russia.
With us now to discuss this further is Nan Su, a senior investigative reporter for The Epoch Times. Nan is an expert in all things China, so his experience will certainly be welcome in this discussion.
Q&A:
- What do you think the general purpose of this forum was? To strengthen the ties between China and Russia? Or to give them room to vent about the United States? Perhaps both?
- It’s interesting how Zhang had some words against the United States, but then quickly responded about wanting to “develop military ties.” Was this just to keep the U.S. from responding in a negative light? Or something else?
- Do you believe Shoigu’s comments have any accuracy? Or are they simply bitter over the U.S. supporting Ukraine in the midst of their ongoing war?
- Where do you see this potential conflict going in 2024? Could Russia and China actually try to escalate its growing tension with the United States? Or will the situation cool off at all?
- Do you believe the assigned Committee looking into China’s actions will take these comments under advisement?
- Speaking of uneasiness with China, you recently contributed to a new Epoch Times documentary called The Final War. Tell us more about it and why it’s such a compelling subject with everything that’s happening right now.
- Where can we learn more about you and see your work over on The Epoch Times?
