The spokesman for the Gun Owners of America discusses the sudden surge in sales, and why Gov. Newsom and his allies should butt out.
The state of California is usually recognized for its strict gun laws. However, in the face of a growing border crisis, it appears that more people realize just how much they need them.
A report from the New York Post revealed that gun sales across the state have surged as more migrants make their way into the country, being released on the streets after the San Diego border station confirmed they were out of space.
Roughly 125,000 migrants have made their way into the area since last September, and that number isn’t likely to drop anytime soon. And what Gov. Gavin Newsom not doing anything to stop them, citizens are literally taking matters into their own hands.
“I don’t think it’s just the people that are coming over to try to find work, I think we have a lot of hostile people that are coming over with ill will, ill intent that will potentially cause chaos,” noted Keith Carnevale, a consumer that recently purchased a firearm.
While this is good news for gun shop owners and those that wish to exercise their Second Amendment rights, there is a slight cause of concern about whether Gov. Gavin Newsom will try to enforce stricter gun laws. But some advocates believe he should focus on bigger matters at hand – like stopping the overflow of migrants into the country.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall Willeford being the “hero with a gun” with the Sutherland Springs situation in 2017, in which he’s co-authored a book. His expertise on gun rights make him an ideal interviewee for this subject.
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on the surging gun sales in the state of California? Do you believe these citizens have more than enough justified reason to purchase a firearm?
- Do you believe matters will get worse as the migrant crisis continues? Could other states also start seeing an increase in gun sales, despite limitations in certain states?
- Do you think Gov. Newsom will attempt to interfere with strict gun laws? And if he does, will he possibly be met with criticism?
- Should Gov. Newsom focus on laws that make it harder to get across the border? Or will he simply brush off the matter, as he’s been doing?
- You’ve been discussing how Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry) is a viable solution when it comes to citizens stopping criminals. Do you believe it’s still the best solution to “active shooter” events?
- For those that argue that Constitutional-Carry would “put more guns on the streets,” what would your counterargument be?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
