Buffalo’s “First Of Its Kind” Lawsuit Is Ignoring the Real Problem (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford has his doubts about the Buffalo NY’s lawsuit against gun makers and sellers.

The filing of a “first of its kind” lawsuit by Buffalo, New York points to a bigger problem the city by not trying to find a more responsible solution.

The city filed a lawsuit just before Christmas against various gun manufacturers, including Beretta, Smith & Wesson, and Remington. In addition, the suit also includes resellers and pawn shops, explaining that they’re the big problem when it comes to the increase in gun violence.

“Members of our community have suffered too much and for too long from gun violence. We must do everything we can to decrease gun violence. Enabling the possession of illegal guns destroys lives and deeply effects our neighborhoods, especially in Black and Brown communities,” said Byron Brown, Mayor of Buffalo.

Many believe that the lawsuit is in response to a shooting that took place in the city earlier this summer, resulting in the deaths of ten people. Some also think that its response follows the lifting of a strict New York gun ordinance by the Supreme Court.

However, several groups and gun rights activists see it as nothing more than a “junk lawsuit,” believing that politicians are merely trying to point a finger at the gun industry instead of working on a real solution.

Here to provide his take on the lawsuit is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is welcome in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. As a supporter of gun rights (and a private gun owner yourself), do you believe there’s any legal standing for this lawsuit?
  2. Do you agree with other gun rights activists and groups that this is more politician finger pointing rather than an actual resolution to the problem at hand?
  3. Doesn’t this lawsuit go against the Protection of Lawful Commerce In Arms Act that Congress passed back in 2005? Do you think it stands any sort of chance as a result?
  4. Do you believe other cities could try and sue gun manufacturers as Buffalo did? Or, at the very least, hold them responsible for the increase in gun violence within their state?
  5. What do you think is the best solution when it comes to gun violence? What’s the option that the city of Buffalo should have considered before this lawsuit?
  6. As a “hero with a gun” who has seen an active shooter situation first-hand, what can you tell us about the effectiveness of a good Constitutional-Carry plan? Compared to an outright ban on weapons?
  7. Where can we learn more about you, as well as the Gun Owners of America?
