Biden Expands IVF for Veterans, Same Sex Couples Ethical Questions and Beyond (Guest: Rev. Jim Harden)

Suggested Introduction for Host:

“Tonight, we’re joined by a distinguished guest, Jim Harden, founder of CompassCare Pregnancy Centers, who brings a compelling perspective on a topic at the heart of ethical, moral, and human rights discussions—In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).

Amidst the Biden administration’s recent announcement to expand taxpayer-funded IVF and surrogacy benefits for veterans, including those in same-sex marriages, Jim argues passionately for the recognition of IVF embryos as fully human, deserving of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

As we navigate these complex issues, Jim advocates for a future where every life is valued and protected, challenging us to reconsider the implications of IVF practices. Let’s delve into a thought-provoking dialogue about life, ethics, and the path forward.”

Q&A:

Can you explain why you believe IVF embryos are fully human and deserve life?

“Each IVF embryo, from the moment of conception, contains a unique DNA blueprint, marking it as a distinct human life. Like any other human being, these embryos deserve protection and the chance to fulfill their potential.”

What do you mean by placing IVF babies in ‘willing wombs’?

“We advocate for the adoption of these frozen embryos, giving them a chance to grow in a surrogate mother’s womb. This process, sometimes called ’embryo adoption,’ allows these children to be born and live full lives.”

How do you respond to the Biden administration’s expansion of IVF services for veterans?

“While we appreciate efforts to support veterans, we’re concerned this policy prioritizes adult desires over children’s rights, leading to the creation of life in a manner that inherently involves loss and commodification of human beings.”

It is a little known fact that women who have had abortions become sterile, leading them to seek IVF treatments. How can abortions cause infertility?

“Abortions cause future reproductive harm, including triggering pelvic inflammatory disease, perforated uteruses, and internal scarring which makes it difficult for future embryos to implant  in the uterine lining , including IVF embryos.”

Is there a moral distinction between creating life through IVF and natural conception?

“The moral concern with IVF lies not in the desire for children but in the method, which often involves creating multiple lives only to select a few for birth, leaving others frozen indefinitely or discarded.”

What is your stance on the use of taxpayer dollars for IVF and surrogacy?

“Public funds should be used in ways that respect all human life. Using taxpayer dollars to support practices that result in the loss of human embryos raises serious ethical and moral questions.”

How does the concept of ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness’ apply to IVF embryos?

“These foundational principles should extend to every human being, regardless of their stage of development. IVF embryos, as human lives, have an inherent right to be given the chance to experience life and liberty.”

What future do you envision for IVF practices?

“We hope for advancements in reproductive technologies that respect the sanctity of every human life, where every created embryo is intended and given the opportunity to thrive.”

How do you reconcile the need for compassion towards couples struggling with infertility with your stance on IVF?

“Our heart goes out to those facing infertility. We support compassionate solutions that honor the dignity of all involved, including adopting children in need of families or exploring ethical fertility treatments.”

What changes would you like to see in how society views and handles IVF embryos?

“A cultural shift to recognize these embryos not as potential life but as existing human lives deserving of dignity, respect, and a chance to live.”

Can you discuss the ethical considerations around ‘selecting’ which embryos to implant?

“This selection process inherently involves making life-and-death decisions based on criteria like genetic screening, which raises profound ethical concerns about the value we assign to human lives.”

How do you address concerns about the potential for creating ‘motherless and fatherless’ children through IVF and surrogacy?

“We believe in the importance of every child having the chance to know and be raised by their biological parents, whenever possible. Ethical considerations must guide reproductive technologies to prioritize the well-being and rights of children.”
