As the nation waits with bated breath for the highly anticipated verdict in the George Floyd murder trial, the rioting and looting continues in Minnesota and other American cities. Meanwhile, Democrat politicians like Rep. Maxine Waters continue to fan the flames of racial hatred with their incendiary comments.
Here to discuss these latest events is native New Yorker and former mayor of Shiloh, Israel, David Rubin, author of the new book, Confronting Radicals: What America Can Learn From Israel.
Suggested Q&A:
- Why have the riots and looting, or as some call them, peaceful protests, continued into 2021? Let’s be honest about it. The issue is not George Floyd, nor is it the accused police officer. The riots and looting that break out in American cities after every killing of a black person by a white police officer are totally unjustified. When suspects resist arrest, there is often violence, but every case is different and it’s usually not about race. People should be protesting the rioting and the rampant looting that is destroying their communities.
- Some of the protestors would claim that it’s all about systemic racism in the police. Are they wrong? Systemic racism existed in the United States when there was slavery and before the civil rights movement eliminated systemic discrimination against black people. However, there is still individual racism, sometimes against black people and sometimes against white people, but its no longer systemic, so to claim that it exists, is an outright lie that continues to be repeated by the radical Left as a tool to achieve its political goals.
- Are you saying that ending racism is not the goal of these protests? Yes, that’s exactly what I’m saying. The real goal of the radical Left that is increasingly dominant in the Democrat party, is to create chaos and anarchy, because that is the first step towards the imposition of a socialist system, which will gradually become totalitarian and will take away people’s individual freedoms.
- Most Democrats who identify with socialism would say that democratic socialism just refers to a benevolent economic system that cares for the weaker segments of society. Are they wrong? Here in Israel, we had a socialist system until the 1980’s when the system was transformed by Prime Minister Menachem Begin at the encouragement of President Reagan. Under democratic socialism, we still had the right to vote, but so many other freedoms that we now take for granted were greatly limited. For example, any worker who didn’t belong to the powerful Histadrut labor monolith had no possibility of career advancement, there was just one health fund that was controlled by the Labor government, all the utilities were monopolies, and the advancement of religious officers in the army was greatly restricted. The end of socialism in the 1980s turned Israel into a roaring free market economy and hi tech power in which individual freedom of choice and creativity has reached unparalleled levels. America should learn from Israel’s mistakes and its successes. Don’t be fooled by the allure of socialism.
