A Louisville Mayoral Candidate Believes Making Guns “Inoperable” Is the Best Solution – But It’s Asking For Trouble (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

With so many active shooter events happening as of late, government officials and lawmakers are scrambling to find a solution. One mayoral candidate in Louisville, however, thinks he has the answer – though it could just be asking for trouble.

Per this report from the Courier Journal, Craig Greenberg, who is running for the position in the Kentucky town, noted that, if elected, he would modify its seized firearms auction by rendering firearms unusable before handing them over.

“It is absurd and dangerous that our law enforcement spends thousands of hours, and millions of taxpayers’ dollars, to get guns off our streets only to see them return to terrorize our neighborhoods,” he noted during a recent press conference. He still wants to send the guns to the nearby city of Frankfort, “but only after they have been rendered inoperative.”

But that brings up some interesting questions. The guns are currently sold in auctions through the Kentucky State Police, in an effort to fund other programs. Rendering them unusable takes away these funds. Not to mention that Greenberg didn’t really dive deeper into why he wants to make the guns inoperable, other than a potential reach for voters in the city election.

With us now to discuss the matter is Stephen Willeford. Stephen serves as a spokesman for Gun Owners of America, and is a proud gun owner himself. You may also recall in 2017 how he stopped the Sutherland Springs, Texas mass shooting, acting as the “good guy with a gun.” His expertise is certainly welcome with this particular subject.

Q&A:

  1. What do you think of Greenberg’s plan on the outset? Do you think he has any sort of solid reasoning for rendering firearms inoperable?
  2. Even though the original owners don’t get their weapons back, does this violate any sort of rights on would-be gun owners?
  3. Do you think Greenberg gave any kind of thought on how inoperable guns would hurt funding of programs that comes from gun sales through auctions for police officers?
  4. Do you believe Greenberg’s thoughts on making guns inoperable is merely a push to get more votes within his state? Or do you believe he’s driven enough that he might consider carrying through with his initiative?
  5. In your opinion, what’s the best thing that can be done with confiscated guns?
  6. Where can we learn more about you as well as the Gun Owners of America?
