A Lawsuit From a Former Seattle Police Officer Shows Just How Problematic Their Department Really Is (Guest: Michael Letts)

The law enforcement veteran discusses the case, and explains why an overhaul of the police department may be in order.

Several police departments across the United States are already suffering from funding cutbacks and officers leaving their ranks. But the problems with Seattle’s police department may be bigger than we ever expected.

A former Seattle police officer named Daniel Auderer has filed a $20 million lawsuit against the department, citing “wrongfully initiated disciplinary proceedings” that led to his firing. He also believes he was attacked on social media, with his personal data – including his address – being leaked online.

Chief Sue Rahr terminated Auderer last year for alleged comments made on a bodycam. However, he believes he was fired because of his role in union leadership.

Though Rahr notes that the firing came from “how to fairly balance ‘intent versus impact’” with Auderer’s comments, he believes the firing came from a deeper resource. What’s more, the Seattle PD reportedly released personal information that have caused him “mental pain and suffering.”

Though the Seattle Police have yet to comment on the matter, this is indeed a distressing situation. So what happens now?

Joining us to discuss the matter further is Michael Letts, a law enforcement veteran with over 30 years of experience under his belt. Letts is President, Founder and CEO of InVest USA, an organization that provides bulletproof vests to police officers through various programs.

His expertise in all things law and order make him a great guest for this interview. Welcome, Michael!

Q&A:

  1. Do you believe Rahr had reasoning to fire Auderer over his reported comments on his bodycam surrounding the death of Jaahnavi Kandula?
  2. What are your thoughts on the Seattle Police Department potentially leaking personal information on Auderer in an attempt to discredit him? Is this something we regularly see from higher-up officials?
  3. Do you think Auderer has enough reasoning behind his lawsuit? Does it deserve a deeper investigation into the department’s actions, at least?
  4. Are there tactics like this potentially taking place at other police departments? Could it be possible that higher-ups are getting certain officers terminated for their place in-office?
  5. Do you think the time has come for the Seattle Police Department to see some sort of overhaul?
  6. Tell us more about InVest USA, and why support for fellow officers is so important right now.
  7. Where can we learn more about InVest USA, and how those interested can help their fellow officers.
    1. You can visit our official InVest USA website, and learn more on the official Invest USA Twitter account. You can also learn about my new initiative at RestoringJustice.US, where we discuss lawful issues surrounding citizens of the United States.
