Two years following the death of George Floyd, pieces of information surrounding the “defund the police” campaign continue to pop up. This time, however, a new one has emerged from an unlikely source – former First Lady Hilary Clinton.
A new Fox report revealed that a nonprofit put together by Clinton supposedly ended up pushing a $75,000 grant to the Washington Alliance for Youth Action between 2020 and 2021. The problem is, however, that the group follows the “defund the police” message, and used the funds to attempt to take apart – and possibly replace – the Minneapolis Police Department.
Per the report, the grant was pushed through Clinton’s Onward Together group to the Alliance, who firmly believes police officers are an enemy, according to its official website.
“Centering Black people in our work means it is time to divest from police, and invest in Black futures. Defunding the police as part of the path towards abolition is one of the many steps that must be taken to ensure that Black people are able to thrive,” the website notes.
Neither Clinton nor anyone within her Onward Together group had anything to say on the alleged donation.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Michael Letts, who served for 30 years within law enforcement. - Following the death of George Floyd, it seemed like a lot of people were all about “defunding the police.” Do you believe they were pushing for this as a way to get justice, or did they have alternate (and possibly political) motives in mind?
- Two years later, it seems some people are still pushing to “defund the police,” though some states – like Seattle, recently – are seeing criminal activity reach an all-time high. Could this be coming back around to bite them and show the importance of police officers?
- Are you shocked that Clinton’s Onward Together group possibly made a donation to a pro “defund the police” group? Or do you think it fits naturally with whatever political agenda she had in mind at the time?
- Does it seem out of place that no official announcement was made about the supposed diverting of the funds? Do you believe it’s something that should be investigated?
- We’ve been seeing reports about police officers leaving their jobs in droves (either through retirement or early leave without pension) due to pressure from these “defund the police” campaigns, as well as the increasingly strenuous conditions surrounding the job. How discouraging is this to you, and what do you hope Congress will do to “turn the tide,” so to speak?
