A Gun Trade Association Is Fighting Back Against a New Illinois Law That Restricts Gun Marketing (Guest: Stephen Willeford)

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains how the group is right, since the law is completely unconstitutional.

It hasn’t even been a week since the new Illinois law preventing gun dealers and manufacturers from marketing their products has gone into effect, and it’s already facing its first legal challenge.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation, based out of Connecticut, recently filed a federal lawsuit against the state, noting that Governor J.B. Pritzker had no right signing it into effect.

“The flawed logic of this unconstitutional law is second only to the contempt for which the authors and Gov. Pritzker hold for the constitutionally protected right of the citizens of his state to keep and bear arms,” Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF’s senior vice president and general counsel, noted in a news release.

This follows a previous federal suit it had filed against Illinois surrounding its ban on assault weapons and large-capacity magazines, which is currently in process at the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals.

So does the Firearm Industry Responsibility Act serve as a hindrance to gun sellers in Illinois? Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, a spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall that Willeford was the “hero with a gun” back in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, and he recently co-wrote a book on the subject. His expertise will certainly prove useful in this matter.

Q&A:

  1. It seems that Illinois is pushing more and more towards its anti-gun stance, particularly with its assault weapons ban and now this particular Act signed into law. What do you think Gov. Pritzker is setting out to do?
  2. What’s the biggest problem with the Firearm Industry Responsibility Act? Does it really go against the Second Amendment as much as Keane notes it does?
  3. Pritzker believes such advertising could be catered to a younger type of gun user. But what do you think about gun advertising as a whole?
  4. Do you believe the NSSF will be victorious in the lawsuit? And if so, could Illinois find a way to retaliate with a new law?
  5. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how you put it together.
  6. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  7. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
    1. My official website is http://www.stephenwilleford.com. You can read more about Gun Owners of America at https://www.gunowners.org/.
