Throughout each city and state, police officers make their presence known when it comes to upholding the law and protecting citizens. However, there’s been some question as of late regarding what Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is doing with her police force.
A new report suggests that Lightfoot has appointed a “secret unit” of police officers that work as her personal protection detail, with 65 officers, five Sergeants and one Lieutenant providing round-the-clock personal protection for her, alongside her hired bodyguards. This comes just two years after Lightfoot proposed removing $80 million from the Chicago Police Department budget, as part of the Defund the Police protests taking place at the time.

- First off, what are your thoughts on Lightfoot using a “secret police” force for her own personal detail? Isn’t she basically removing security that could be provided for citizens by doing this?
- What do you think motivated Lightfoot to do this? Do you believe she fears some sort of backlash after calling for a slashing of the Chicago Police Department budget?
- Lightfoot originally called for $80 million to be slashed from the budget, but it ended up being lower at $59 million. What kind of impact do you think this has on its police force?
