Intro: Will President Trump lose the military vote after his purported comments calling veterans suckers and losers? Typically, troops have given broad support for conservatives in the past, but is this a deal killer? Joining us in this discussion is Dr. Gordon Klingenschmitt, a former 20-year veteran, a former State Representative, and a Navy Chaplain.
Q&A:
1): A new poll of active duty troops by the Military Times suggest 41% support for Biden, 37% for Trump, and the rest 22% are uncommitted. Do you believe this poll, that troops don’t support Trump?
No. Unlike most unbiased polls, this one was voluntary or self-selected respondents. That means most silent troops who are Trump supporters were afraid to speak up, for fear of reprisals or peer pressure. The loud-mouths want to trash Trump, but I predict the 22% undecided all swing for Trump.
2) Has Trump done anything to upset the traditionally conservative military voters?
No. Trump gave the military 3 raises in the three years he has been in office. He funded the needed upgrades to our defenses and has pulled our troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan. One could argue the troops don’t want to be deployed to the Mexican border, but I think most of us signed up to Defend America here at our own US borders, not overseas in Iraq. He also turned around the Veterans Administration, and polls show 75% of veterans say VA health care improved.
3) Do believe the Atlantic article in which Trump was quoted as saying he wouldn’t visit a cemetery because WWI veterans were losers?
No, that article quoted one anonymous source who’s been debunked by everybody else who possibly attended. John Bolton was there, and he denies that quote, despite being critical of the president. And Trump himself said “There is nobody that feels more strongly about our soldiers, our wounded warriors, our soldiers that died in war than I do. It’s a hoax just like the fake dossier was a hoax, just like the Russia, Russia, Russia was a hoax. It was a total hoax, no collusion. Just like so many other things, it’s a hoax.”
4) You were a former Navy Chaplain, and served 20 year in the military, did you see any broad support from the troops for Democrats?
Almost none, except maybe among African Americans from urban areas who supported Obama. But one issue where Trump beats Obama is on transgenders in the military. Obama forced the Pentagon to admit transgender cross-dressers in the military, to share common showers and berthing, but Trump has reversed that somewhat, and if Biden is elected that bad policy will destroy good order, discipline, and morale.
5) Under Obama-Biden there was also widespread persecution of military Christians, do you see that returning if Biden is elected?
Yes, at least a dozen Christians were singled out and punished under Obama, including Chaplain Scott Squires, SMSgt Philip Monk, and Chaplain Curt Cizek who were all punished for expressing their views of the Bible. Trump has defended religious freedom for our troops, and restored crosses to chapels.
6) You yourself were punished as a Navy Chaplain for praying “in Jesus name” in uniform outside of chapel. Did you write a book about this?
Yes, my book is “How To Liberate the World: A Step-by-step guide to take back your country” and in it I tell my story as a Navy Chaplain who endured misdemeanor court-martial for praying in Jesus’ name outside of chapel. But I was later vindicated by Congress, and also won election to the Colorado legislature. So we teach people how to change bad laws, like I’ve done in 13 states, in How To Liberate The World.
