Here’s Why Illinois’ Latest Bills To Increase Gun Safety Aren’t Going To Do Any Good

Gun Owners of America spokesman Sam Paredes discusses the two controversial bills, which are filled with problems.

Once again, Illinois lawmakers are attempting to introduce new legislation in an effort to increase gun safety. And once again, they appear to be missing the point.

These lawmakers just introduced two new bills as part of the Safe at Home Legislation. The first, HB5888, would reduce the amount of time a person has to report a missing gun, down to 48 from 72. The second, HB5891, deals with proper gun safety.

However, Stacy Misckewitch, who is co-owner of RSM Firearms, believes the fine print on these two bills are missing the focus of what’s important.

“Instead of focusing on responsible owners, maybe focusing more on mental health issues,” Misckewitch explained. “Focusing on why there’s the problem to begin with when there wasn’t one maybe 20, 40, 50 years ago and now suddenly this is becoming more and more prevalent.”

That seems to be something a lot of these gun bills are apparently missing. And that may result in neither passing, though State Representative John Cabello could easily re-file in the following session.

Sam Parades is available to speak on this subject, serving as Executive Director of the Gun Owners of America. We welcome him to the show.

Q&A:

  1. Why is Illinois so determined to pass restrictive gun laws for its citizens?
  2. Misckewitch may have brought up a good point when it comes to focusing more on the state of mental health instead of general gun restrictions. Why do most lawmakers miss this?
  3. Is it just harder to determine what kind of impact mental health makes? Or is it simply just easier to put a “gun ban” in place, as it were?
  4. Why do you think that Concealed-Carry (or Constitutional-Carry as some call it) isn’t given more consideration when it comes to gun safety?
  5. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
