The Gun Owners of America spokesman believes that the state will once again lose a battle against the Second Amendment.
It hasn’t even been that long since the Supreme Court overturned New York’s unfair ban on guns, and yet the state is apparently at it again, creating a nuisance for private gun owners.
The New York Senate recently introduced a bill that would outlaw the sale of any firearm that could easily be modified using what’s called an “auto sear.” This is a switch that, to some, would create a modification that is deemed “illegal.”
The Senate is using research from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which indicates that the proliferation of auto sears has begun “flooding our communities.”
“This increasing demand for machine guns by criminal elements does not just present a public safety danger, it is unsafe for law enforcement as well, who are increasingly outgunned by the weaponry they face,” says Kristina Mastropasqua, an ATF spokesperson.
However, various gun groups indicate that these statistics are blown out of proportion, and the use of “auto sears” isn’t nearly as severe as they let on. In fact, private gun owners only utilize their guns with these out of sheer protection.
Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall Willeford being the “hero with a gun” with the Sutherland Springs situation in 2017, in which he’s co-authored a book. His expertise on gun rights make him an ideal interviewee for this subject.
Q&A:
- What are your thoughts on New York going after the rights of private gun owners again with a proposed ban on the “auto sear”?
- For those unfamiliar, how is an “auto sear” used with a firearm? Is it really a necessity when it comes to certain guns?
- Why are the ATF trying to blow up statistics when it comes to the use of an “auto sear”? Are they simply trying to justify New York’s ban?
- Maryland passed a similar law this week that would seemingly ban “auto sears” and Glock switches. How much of a violation is this to the rights of private gun owners?
- Do you believe the Second Amendment will likely overturn these laws? Or will the Supreme Court possibly step in again, as previously done to New York?
- You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
- Where can people find your book?
