Intro: We’ve all heard at before, once, if not dozens of times in a myriad of levels of severity, for skinned knees to major surgery. Mom says, “Come to mommy; let me kiss it and you’ll free better. Dad says, “Put a bandage on it, while never breaking stride from reading the news, and the dentist prescribing Oxycodone for tooth aches might downplay the highly addictive nature of opioids and synthethic substitutes.

Many who remember how effective powerful painkillers were at killing pain, and now seek to find something similar to kill the emotional paid of the ‘new normal’ lasting for what seems forever.

Medical futurist Dr. Dan O’Brien MD joins ux to express his concern over what he says could become the worst crisis of addiction ever seen the the United States, that is becoming known as Opioid us

Q&A:

Dr. Dan question #1: How many patients in this country are affected by Opioid use disorder?

Dr. Dan answer: According to the CDC, there were 191 million opioid prescriptions prescribed from 2012-2017. Opioid use disorders affect over 16 million people worldwide, over 2.1 million in the USA, and there are over 120,000 deaths worldwide annually attributed to opioids. Examples of opioids include heroin, morphine, codeine, fentanyl, and synthetic opioids such as oxycodone.

Dr. Dan question #2: What do you see the future of post COVID-19 regarding addiction?

Dr. Dan answer: According to the scientific literature with increased social distancing and COVID-19 cases the rise of opioid abuse and substance abuse is increasing. In some areas it’s 40% increase usage during this COVID-19, even in some areas of Ohio as well. These drugs include prescription pain relievers, heroin, and synthetic opioids such as fentanyl.

Dr. Dan question #3: Why is overdose rate so high during this time?

Dr. Dan answer: The lack of resources, and no support system since addiction patients were used to live group therapy sessions and during COVID-19 they do not have access to this.

Dr. Dan question #4: What are ways in the future to utilize new healthcare technology to help opioid use disorder patients?

Dr. Dan answer: Using telepysch patients can connect with their group therapy sessions to remain on track and have the support they need.

Dr. Dan question #5: What needs to be done to help these opioid use disorder patients?

Dr. Dan answer: Ensuring that opioid patients have the ability to connect with their group therapies via telemedicine. It’s key to have these opioid patients stay connected because as people are social distancing we are losing track of these patients. These patients don’t have an outlet like they used with their addiction to so it’s important to continue to reach out to help these patients.

Dr. Dan question #6: Is the Opioid Crisis limited to big cities or other areas?

Dr. Dan answer: It’s everywhere, in large cities and in Middle America.

Dr. Dan question #7: Where may we get more information on this topic and your other writings and discussion?

Dr. Dan answer: At DrDanMd.com or on Twitter @DrDanMd1
