The ATF Could Be Preparing a Rule That Could Effectively Ban Private Gun Sales

Gun Owners of America spokesman Stephen Willeford explains why this could pose a problem to potential and future gun owners.

It’s no secret that the Biden administration has been working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on limitations surrounding gun sales. However, a watchdog group may have uncovered its most drastic attempt yet.

Per this report from the New York Post, a group called Empower Oversight have noted that the ATF is putting together a rule that would require background checks for most or all gun sales – which would put a kibosh on being able to sell guns privately.

Biden had previously proposed a regulation surrounding putting together background checks on federally licensed gun dealers that “repetitively” sell guns – though that could easily violate certain rights.

ATF whistleblowers reportedly put together the details for the group, and, in turn, they’ve requested documents from the Biden administration – though they aren’t likely to answer.

Empower Oversight president Tristan Leavitt noted, “Such a sweeping rule with the effect of banning private sales would clearly violate the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, which declares that ‘the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.’”

Joining us now to discuss this further is Stephen Willeford, the spokesman for the Gun Owners of America. You may recall that Willeford played the role of the “hero with a gun” in the 2017 Sutherland Springs incident, one that he has since co-authored a book about. His expertise in all things gun rights make him a vital guest for the show. Welcome, Mr. Wlleford.

Q&A:

  1. Why do you think Biden is so driven to work with the ATF to put effective gun laws into place? Is he really trying to look that good to the people that voted him into office? Or is it something else?
  2. Why does the ATF continue to try and infringe on the rights of private gun owners, despite the Second Amendment of the Constitution continuing to protect them?
  3. Suppose someone argues that registering purchased guns offers protection from people deemed “viable threats” when it comes to “active shooter” events. What argument would you have for that?
  4. Do you believe that guns will play a pivotal part in the 2024 Presidential Election? Will Biden’s hardened stance eventually cost him voters, if he keeps at it?
  5. You’ve spoken for the longest time about how people that practice Constitutional-Carry (or Concealed-Carry, as some call it) are the best defense against “active shooters.” Why do you feel that is the case?
  6. You recently wrote a book called A Town Called Sutherland Springs: Faith and Heroism Through Tragedy, revolving around your 2017 “hero with a gun” situation. Tell us more about how this came together, and why it’s such an important read right now.
  7. Where can people find your book?
    1. You can purchase the book here on Amazon, both in paperback and Kindle format.
  8. Where can we learn more about you, as well as Gun Owners of America?
