CALLING OUT SCOTUS DURING SOTU: President Chastises Supreme Court in Front of Nation but what was the case about? (Bossie in DC/National shows only)
During Wednesday night's State of the Union, President Obama singled out the Supreme Court, whose members sat right in front of him, for its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission (FEC). While most people are aware the case involves McCain / Feingold, many are unfamiliar what prompted the suit.
In 2007, Citizens United produced a film called, “Hillary: The Movie” that was extremely damaging to senator Clinton. While the group wasn't prohibited from releasing the film, a court ruled that it was not permitted to advertise for it. Citizens United president, David Bossie, found this to be an infringment on the First Amendment rights of Citizens United. The Supreme Court agreed.
So what's so offensive about the film? Aside from featuring well known commentators like Dick Morris, Ann Coulter, Tony Blankley, and others it paints an extremely damaging – and hard to refute – portrait of then senator Hillary Clinton. Had it been released widely, it very well could have torpedoed her presidential run.
During the January 27th State of the Union, President Obama derided the Supreme Court's decision as having overturned one hundred years of law. There are two somewhat interesting asides to what happened at the State of the Union. First, Hillary Clinton was conspicuous in her absence and secondly, footage of then senator Barack Obama actually appeared in the film. In fact, Obama's attorneys attempted to get Citizens United to delete the portion of the film that featured him. Citizens United refused.

ABOUT DAVID BOSSIE...
David N. Bossie is the president of Citizens United and Citizens United Foundation, both of which are conservative grassroots organizations headquartered in Washington, DC.
Bossie is the former chief investigator for the United States House of Representatives Committee on Government Reform and Oversight. During Bill Clinton’s two terms as president, he led investigations ranging from the Whitewater land deal to the illegal transfer of dual-use technology to China and the illegal foreign money schemes in the 1996 Clinton re-election campaign.
Bossie is the executive producer of several award-winning documentaries. Border War: The Battle over Illegal Immigration premiered in theaters across the country to standing-room-only audiences and was released on DVD on October 15, 2006.
