REID’S DIRTY HEALTHCARE DEALS: Ironically, Opponents Say if the Bill Passes, Blame Falls on the GOP (Larry Pratt resides in DC)

REID’S DIRTY HEALTHCARE DEALS: Ironically, Opponents Say if the Bill Passes, Blame Falls on the GOP (Larry Pratt resides in DC)

Image Whenever Congress is criticized for not getting anything done in the face of a real problem, it’s usually because the majority Democrats are trying to introduce some sweeping legislation that makes Americans uncomfortable, and the minority Republicans can only stand up and say, “no.”

. . . Except when talking about the current healthcare debate in the Senate.

Yes, Congress faces a real problem. Virtually everyone admits that we need to have healthcare reform. And, true, the majority Democrats have introduced a 2,074-page albatross to the American taxpayer. But this time, according to Larry Pratt, Executive Director of the Gun Owners of America (GOA), the Republicans aren’t doing their job of saying, “no.”

Reid knows he faces a challenge in getting the bill passed. And he already knows of three Democrats and one Independent who voted to debate the bill, but will NOT pass it if it has a government-healthcare option. So, Reid is busy working closed-door deals to get his way. Ironically, Pratt says the blame falls on the GOP if they allow this to happen.

“The Senate can do little without every senator agreeing to do it—or at least not objecting to its being done,” writes Pratt in the GOA’s e-mail alert to its constituents. “Hence, you hear about ‘unanimous consent requests.’ This means that every senator agrees to consider a particular amendment or, at least, vote on it at a particular time. The thing about these requests is, they almost always make it easier for the bill to pass.”

For Pratt, the bill isn’t even worth bartering over, with its enormous price tag, the threat it poses to the quality of healthcare and its inevitable funding–deficit disaster that “would restructure the American economy in a way that has not been seen at any time during our lifetimes.” . . . Not to mention, it recognizes gun ownership as a health threat, like smoking, and would force gun owners to turn all their medical records over to a national health database.

And for this, Pratt says the GOP must stand up now. “But instead, (Senate Republican Minority Leader) Mitch McConnell has already started allowing amendments to be offered, which will let the Senate Democrats ‘clean up’ the bill ... just enough to get it passed.”

Of all times to get political and try to thwart the critics who say the GOP is nothing but the “opposition party,” Pratt says this isn’t it.

“We don’t want Mitch McConnell to try to make himself look good by pretending to be a ‘non-obstructionist’,” adds Pratt. “We want Senate Republicans to move heaven and earth to protect Americans from Harry Reid’s scheme of bribery, fraud and dirty politics.”
