OBAMA & IRAN, WHAT GIVES? White House Position in Question After Word of Kerry’s Tehran Visit (Avi Lipkin is in Israel, 7 hrs ahead of EST)
Several days ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that Senator John Kerry (D-MA) was considering a plan to make a diplomatic visit to engage the Iranian government in Tehran—which would’ve been the first high-level U.S. emissary visit to that country in 30 years.
Since then, the political pundits have come out to trash the idea for its legitimizing and emboldening the Ahmadinejad/Ayatollah regime. Meanwhile, a Kerry spokesman has denied the report, saying there is no such trip in the works. And yet, for some on the outside looking in, like Avi Lipkin, former member of the Israeli Defense Forces and a former translator inside the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, the question of whether or not Kerry goes at this point may not matter.
On behalf of Israel, a party with its own unique stake in the game, Lipkin can comment on the signals coming out of the White House in these times that are mixed at best . . . while some under-the-radar activity in the Middle East at this moment adds another dimension to current tensions.
When Kerry’s trip was just talk, an Obama administration official expressed White House approval, saying, “This sounds like the kind of travel a chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee would—and should—undertake.” At the same time, Obama remains silent once again during violent Iranian oppression against political reformist protestors inside the country.
So, what gives? How is Israel interpreting Obama’s movements—or lack thereof? And how might they be impacting Israel’s Iranian strategy?
Further, while on your show, Lipkin can also shed light on Israeli Radio News reports that the Persian Gulf states are advising their citizens to stock up on food for three months—a chatter that rings with déjà vu for Lipkin.
