RELIGIOUS RIGHT HIT FROM ‘BLIND SIDE’ Movie Inspires One Leader to Reexamine Group’s Moral Record (Bob Peters is in EST)
For many outside the community labeled the “religious right,” the unwritten definition of the group might include—whether justified or not—the words ‘extreme,’ ‘intolerant,’ ‘stubborn’ and, above all else, ‘self-righteous.’
But disproving that judgment is attorney Robert Peters, president of Morality in Media, a forerunner in the cause to legally combat obscenity detrimental to children and families.
Recently, in watching the new Warner Brothers movie The Blind Side, Peters found more than an appreciation for the film’s morally uplifting message. He found the self-deprecating inspiration to reexamine the moral record of the religious right community with which he identifies. And like the title of the movie, he confesses that the religious right has had a ‘blind side’ over the years.
“ . . . (starting) in the 70s and 80s, many ‘morally conservative’ Christians (have) stepped into the political arena to defend moral and family values against growing attacks from the courts, media, schools and ‘gay activists’,” Peters says. “In my opinion, we were right to do so, but we missed the mark when we failed to see other matters that needed our attention, like chronic unemployment, family breakdown, failing public schools and crime in black communities.”
He adds, “What I find particularly disturbing about our failure to ‘see’ the dire needs in many black communities is that so many African Americans are Christians. While Christians are called to do good to ‘all men,’ we are called ‘especially’ to do good to those who are of the household of faith.”
In the heat of the culture war taking place right now across America, call Special Guests to schedule an interview with Bob Peters, and prepare for a fascinating critique of the religious right and the morally conservative from, of all people, someone on the inside.
