REID’S “ABUSIVE” RHETORIC: Is the Unemployment-Equals-Violence Argument Totally Misguided? (Guests in EST)
Call it the cheese slipping just a little more off the cracker, or just another example of how life inside the Beltway bubble causes career politicians to lose touch with reality, but Senate Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is at it again—this time using his bully pulpit to say that rising unemployment is leading to an increase in spousal abuse across the country.
Feminist groups, social workers and others who track the issue of domestic violence point to studies that make Reid’s connection. And they say battery reports in the past couple of years confirm Reid’s assertion.
All that being true or not is beside the point say conservative critics—both of the Republican and Tea Party persuasion. They call Reid out on his pontificating, exposing it as a shameless attempt to exploit domestic abuse for the sake of pushing his next irresponsible big-spend ticket item through Congress.
So which side is right? . . . Neither, say authors and family consulting experts, Hal and Melanie Young. While the Youngs would agree that Reid has no place making the reference in his attempt to sell his “jobs” bill on Capitol Hill, they would back that up by saying any political argument on the issue is completely misguided. Why? Because the Harry Reids of the world cannot legislate in lieu of the parenting necessary to train young men on how to handle economic and other life hardships.
“Tough times call for resilience, not violence,” says Hal Young. “Even in a society where self-esteem is king and everybody is ‘special,’ boys soon discover that life does have winners and losers. When parents teach their sons to work hard and strive for success, they need to give them the tools to deal with setbacks, too. Their ability to bounce back and try again may be the key to their future.” And, in this case, the future of our nation.
For an entirely new angle on the latest controversial comments of Harry Reid, call Special Guests today to arrange an interview with the thought-provoking, but down-to-earth, Hal and Melanie Young. Your audience will appreciate their message tremendously.
