WILL NATIONAL HEALTHCARE TERMINATE YOUR HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT?
Since the National Healthcare Bill passed in the Senate on Christmas Eve, the Bill has been largely out of the news and in smoke-filled political deal making back rooms.
During this “Lull before the Storm” period, some of the most dangerous aspects of the Healthcare Bill need to be discussed. Available for such a discussion is Samaritan Ministries Vice President, James Lansberry, who made the following statement, regarding one of the most dangerous aspects of the current Senate version of the Bill:
“The current administration wants to take away every alternative to government healthcare, including your Heath Savings Account. HSAs were created by Republicans for the purpose of giving people direct control over their healthcare spending and an incentive to spend wisely and frugally, both of which are often missing from our current healthcare system. By turning people from free-spending healthcare consumers into buyers spending an account they control, HSAs have helped rein in runaway healthcare costs while empowering citizens -- and have for those with HSAs reduced dependence on government for healthcare, a dependence some politicians want to impose permanently on everyone."
Lansberry adds, “HSAs are an important island of freedom was left for health care sharing ministries, exempting their members from the penalties for the individual mandate. HealthCare Sharing Ministries (HCSMs) are not protected from the penalty for the employer mandate, however. It was a close vote, and now a conference committee will decide on the language for the final health reform bill to be reheard by both houses.”
