SOLD! . . . FOR $45 MILLION! Nelson Gives Up Abortion Stand for Federal Funding Privilege (Chris Slattery is in Eastern Time)
Negotiations have become payoffs, and now the Democrats’ healthcare bill—largely unpopular with the American public—is shaping up like it’s going to pass in the Senate.
The last pin to fall was Ben Nelson of Nebraska, after he softened on his anti-abortion funding position in exchange for $45 million of federal subsidies to cover his state’s expanded Medicaid population for a decade.
Nelson claims he also secured provisions in the bill that ease his mind on abortion. But staunch pro-life advocates, such as Chris Slattery, founder of EMC Front Line Pregnancy Centers, strongly disagree.
When asked about his reaction, Slattery pointed to the views expressed by the likes of House Republican Leader, John Boehner (OH) and the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC). Both rip apart the wording of the bill’s “manager’s amendment,” installed to satisfy the likes of Nelson, calling it a smokescreen of “accounting gimmicks” on paper that, in reality, do nothing to stop the use of taxpayer money to cover abortions.
Now, Nelson is facing a backlash—even from his own state’s governor, who contacted Nelson earlier to express his concern over the inevitable burden expanded Medicaid costs would place on Nebraska. But, apparently, Nelson didn’t get the point. Because after he secured his deal, Governor Heineman said he “did not ask for a special deal, only a fair deal,” calling the overhaul bill “bad news for Nebraska and bad news for America.”
For a longer look at the latest healthcare bill on the brink of passage, how it may affect abortion rates when the plan is in place in a few years, and how it may even affect our nation long-term, call Special Guests today to schedule an interview with Chris Slattery.
