This past week, Sandy Froman (pictured), former president of the National Rifle Association (NRA) went public with her opposition of Sonya Sotomayor for the Supreme Court seat being left vacant by Chief Justice Souter. Informally, she was joined by another past NRA president and several current board members.

So, why is the current NRA leadership still a country unheard from? Larry Pratt, Executive Director of Gun Owners of America (GOA), the other leading gun rights organization that announced its position on Sotomayor weeks ago, is available for interviews to discuss this mystery.

The statement issued by the Froman coalition said, “Judge Sotomayor’s record on the Second Amendment causes us grave concern over her treatment of this enumerated right [to keep and bear arms] . . . As Second Amendment leaders deeply concerned about preserving all fundamental rights for current and future generations of Americans, we strongly oppose this nominee, and urge the Senate not to confirm Judge Sotomayor.”

Sounds like an accurate reflection of NRA views under any leadership. And yet, the current NRA is unwilling to make such a statement, saying in a letter to the Senate Judiciary committee that, while it has “very serious concerns” regarding the prospect of Sotomayor as a Chief Justice, it is withholding official comment out of respect for the confirmation process.

Why such a passive stance from the renowned champion of 2nd Amendment rights? Is it some kind of high-road strategy, or a genuine suspension of judgment until the Sotomayor hearings?

Schedule an interview with the head of the GOA, Larry Pratt for an interesting speculation on his counterparts’ thinking and a candid discussion about the expected impact of a likely confirmation of this judge—one whom many believe may follow Obama’s campaign dance step and make promises to gun advocates she doesn’t intend to keep.
