COAST-TO-COAST WATER CRISES: Threats to Americans Stretch Beyond the Gulf (Guest in EDT)
Somewhere under the massive umbrella that is the BP oil disaster, there are similar pressures on other communities, literally from coast to coast, that are only small by comparison to the Gulf region’s unprecedented catastrophe.
While the oil siege in the Gulf represents a slow, merciless assault on the entire way of life along America’s southern coast, issues along Cape Cod in the east, all the way to San Diego in the west involve similar crises in that they pose a threat to one of the most integral aspects of any civilization—the community’s public water supply.
In Cape Cod, the state Department of Environmental Protection has sounded an E. coli alert and issued an order for residents to boil their tap water for any use involving consumption or, for that matter, contact.
Meanwhile, the city of San Diego has issued, for the second consecutive year, mandatory summertime water-usage restrictions on residents. Most concerning is that this development in particular is in line with numerous studies across multiple industries, from geology to agriculture, that document how, by 2013, at least 36 states in the union will see significant water shortages.
So, outside of conservation and other developments in technology and best practices that may take too long to solve more immediate problems like these, what can be done?
Thomas Ryan Ward, Director of Education for EcoloBlue (pronounced ee-COAL-low-blue), is available for interviews to explore the trend of our water crises and offer a completely unusual solution that begins with a simple common denominator.
Among all of these events—and others not even mentioned, from Boston to New Jersey to Tennessee in just the last few months—the key is the flawed concept of a single “public” water supply serving a multitude of people. On your show, Ward can introduce a realistic method by which we can change the water-supply paradigm, shifting us from the vulnerability of a public source that, when compromised, threatens so many, to a safer, more resilient self-reliance model.
