‘BULLET’ TRAIN: Senator’s Bill to Extend Gun Rights to Amtrak Travelers (guests in DC or via phone)

Image

Regardless of anyone’s political persuasion, all too often it would seem as if Washington is a black hole for common sense. For gun rights proponents who see the Constitution so clearly, a perfect example of this reality can be summed up this way: If you’re a gun owner with a fear of flying, and you want to take a hunting trip, you’re out of luck.

Might seem silly. But for a tireless 2nd Amendment crusader like Larry Pratt, Executive Director of the Gun Owners of America (GOA), it’s an unrighteous fact that must be changed.

One Senator, Roger Wicker (R-MS), has made a move to do just that. Currently, under Amtrak train regulations, passengers are prohibited from transporting firearms onboard, whether in checked or carry-on baggage. Problem is, contend Pratt, Wicker and other gun rights proponents, the train is funded by federal taxpayer money.

Also available for interviews is Erich Pratt, communications director for Gun Owners of America. Erich points out that, interestingly enough, law-abiding gun owners can transport firearms on a commercial plane, as long as they declare the weapon and check it properly with the airline.

Wicker’s proposal, in the form of an amendment to the 2010 Transportation Housing & Urban Development Appropriations bill, calls for blocking any federal taxpayer money to Amtrak if the railway does not lift its gun restriction and allow its passengers to travel with their guns similar to the way they can on a plane.

From the lack of law enforcement present on these trains, to the underlying principle of this issue, to how it fits in a broader gun-rights tug-of-war with a leftist White-House-and-Congress double team, Larry Pratt can detail all the reasons why this legislation is so important.
