To Corey Stewart, nothing says Merry Christmas like a brand-new AR-15 semiautomatic rifle under the tree.
Stewart, chairman of the Prince William County board of supervisors, announced Saturday a holiday campaign giveaway of an AR-15 “to one lucky supporter.”
Stewart is vying to be the Republican nominee for Virginia governor in next year’s election. He has been actively raising money for his campaign for the last several months. The campaign email announcing the gun give-away encourages those who enter to donate to his campaign.
In an email announcing the offer, Stewart, who often courts headlines with his controversial comments, acknowledged the contest “is sure to send the liberal media into a frenzy.”
He also noted the contest is meant to “show his dedication” to the Second Amendment.
“Our liberties come from our Creator. And the government exists to protect our liberties – not to manage them,” Stewart wrote. “That’s why I firmly believe our right to self-defense — enshrined in our Constitution — is not negotiable.”
